Latest Brain Time Update

Even one night of poor sleep can make you feel crummy, and it’s worse if it happens night after night!

You need to know about one cause of poor sleep you might find surprising – how we’re lighting our homes, our screens, and even the streetlights of our city!

We evolved with sun, moon, and fire as sources of light, and the shifting light cued our brain when to sleep and when to wake up. The blue light of the midday sky is stimulating and invigorating, while the yellow, orange, and red of sunrise and sunset is calming and healing.

We used to have a balance of warm and cool light guiding our brain and keeping us healthy – but not anymore.

Blue LED (light-emitting diodes) are increasingly common and they’re stressful for your brain. They’re in the screens of smartphones, computers and flat-screen TVs, as well as headlights in cars, streetlights in cities, and likely the lights in your house.

Blue LED light puts a damper on melatonin, a hormone in your brain that would otherwise rise in the evening and get you ready for sleep. When you use screens at night it’s harder to sleep.

Even driving home in an LED-lit area may throw your body clock off kilter, prompting the American Medical Association to urge communities to reduce the harmful effects of high-intensity [LED] street lighting.

Large studies have found that brighter nighttime light in communities is linked with:

* Reduced sleep times

* Dissatisfaction with sleep quality

* Excessive sleepiness

* Impaired daytime functioning

* Obesity

So what do you do with this information about light? I suggest you start with with two simple steps:

1) Swap the LEDs in your home for clear bulb incandescent, especially at night.

2) Modify the light on your screens. Download the free Iris software that adjusts the background color, and brightness of your screens according to the time of day. Click here.

I also recommend that you watch a video discussion between Dr. Mercola and Dr. Wunsch about LED lights. Click here.

Your evolutionary inheritance is affecting you in surprising ways thru your eyes. Take these simple steps to protect your health and enhance your wellbeing!

What is Medical Herbalism / Phytotherapy?
Medical Herbalism / Phytotherapy consists of using plants, together with modern scientific research and thorough medical training. Training received by individuals calling themselves ‘herbalist’ or Traditional Healers differ from that received by Phytotherapists / Medical Herbalist. Phytotherapists refer to GP’s if they know that the patient is requiring immediate medical intervention, they are trained to always recommend what is best for the patient. In South Africa a Phytotherapist / Medical Herbalist must have completed a five year post- graduate in Phytotherapy and professional registration with the AHPCSA.

This training is similar to medical students’ training and includes full courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Internal Medicine, Differential Diagnosis, Clinical Methods, etc. Instead of pharmacology of drugs used in conventional medicine, herbs and their pharmacology are studied. Phytotherapist is skilled in compounding and dispensing medicines, specifically formulated to treat and/or prevent disease. Emphasis is placed on prevention and treatment of disease and includes nutrition and lifestyle management.

We are specialists in the formulation of herbal prescriptions that are uniquely designed for each patient. We aim to treat the person as a whole and get to the root of problems in order to eradicate symptoms and adress the cause of disease. For herbal medicine to work optimally, it needs to be used holistically in a formulation made specifically for you. The remedies available in health shops or pharmacies are generalised formulations and are aimed at the treatment of symptoms and as such do not address the cause of disease.

Herbs used are of the highest quality. These herbs – due to the strength, potency, quality, purety, medicinal action/interaction and specific patient based – will not be found in your local store / pharmacy. Several herbal formulations are imported. This is not an “over the counter” product. We do prescribe herbs in the form of tinctures, teas, capsules, tablets, syrups, creams, poultices, linaments or oils, depending on the condition treated. Phytotherapist treat their patients with the highest quality herbal medicine. They use only whole plant extracts in all their formulations, each herb prescribed is compounded to achieve maximum quality and ensure efficacy of each herb.

What to expect from a visit to a Medical Herbalist / Phytotherapist?
A consultation with a Phytotherapist starts with a full medical history. The practitioner then performs all relevant physical examinations and may send the patient for any laboratory tests (incl blood tests / urine tests etc.) / X-Rays etc. that may be required – and based on these clinical findings the Phytotherapist makes a medical diagnosis and assesses the patients general state of health from a holistic perspective. Sick notes might be issued so that the patient can fully recover from current condition being treated. The practitioner will then formulate a treatment and management plan, including lifestyle adjustments, nutrition and a comprehensive herbal prescription, specific to that patient.

Which conditions are suitable for Phytotherapy?
Most conditions respond well to herbal medicine. This includes acute and chronic conditions from feeling ‘run down’ to Fever, Colds and Flu, Arthritis, Autoimmune Disease, Hormonal Imbalances (PMS, Menopause), Infertility, Impotence, Skin Disease (acne, psoriasis, eczema), Digestive disease, Urinary Tract Disease, Respiratory/lung diseases, Hypertention, Diabetis Mellitis, Choleterol (Hyperlipidaemia), ADHD, Depression and Anxiety to name but a few.
As Practitioners of Holistic Medicine, Phytotherapy is also used to Prevent / Treat Disease, so one may visit a Phytotherapist for assistance with maintenance of health, prevention and treatment of disease.

Herbal medicine may be used in conjunction with conventional medicine if under the supervision of a Medical Herbalist / Phytotherapist. Phytotherapists are specially trained to understand how herbs and drugs interact, patients on chronic medication require this professional attention and will benefit from the formulations dispensed by a Phytotherapist. This ensures that you avoid side effects and drug interactions, and receive the best possible advice and treatment. It is, therefore, recommended that if you are considering trying herbal medication that you first consult a Phytotherapist.

A Phytotherapist is trained to understand these underlying causes of disease and uses herbal prescriptions tailor-made for you to correct and optimise the body’s natural functioning. Using ‘standardised extracts’ for herbs may cause side effects, especially if you’re on conventional medication. Consult a Phytotherapist before using any herbal remedies. Legislation has been passed to enable medical aids to cover Phytotherapy. However, it is advisable to check with your individual medical aid scheme before visiting your Practitioner. Rates might be above medical aid rates.

Imagine a freak accident – the chances are one in a million, it’s not your fault, and you break your leg.If you’re like 70% of the population, you’ll call it bad luck.

But wait a minute – are you sure it’s bad?

30% of people in a scenario like this count themselves lucky

because they realize that it could have been worse! You’re

lucky from one perspective and unlucky from another.

Your brain (especially the left side of your brain) tries to

make sense of what happened and label it as good or bad,

lucky or unlucky.

Each perspective is true – but you’ll feel better and

function more effectively if you remember that things could

have been worse!

The perspective you chose is especially important when

you’re dealing with a challenging situation. It will make a

difference in how you feel and how effective you are.

Here’s what to do in a tough situation:

*  Find something about the situation that’s going

well. This is good for the right side of your

brain and it will calm your anxiety.

* Consider how it could have been worse. This is

good for the left side of your brain and it will

free up your thinking.

This exercise will set the conditions for greater ease and

Frustration and Mercury Retrograde

August 30 – September 22, 2016 in earth-sign Virgo Mercury Retrograde

Mercury is in retrograde again!” If you don’t know astrology, you may have wondered what they were talking about. Of all planetary aspects, this one seems to frustrate people no end without them having a clue as to why.

This phenomenon is one of the few that affects everyone in a fairly uniform way, and its effects are always obvious. Once you begin to pay attention to how events in your life change during these phases, you will soon see how important it is to take note of them.

Mercury retrograde periods would not be good times to do anything involving communications, such as launch a website, or a publicity campaign.Begin any form of study especially via the internet it would seem.

These phases are also considered poor times to launch any new endeavors, even if they are not related to the communications industries.

Similarly, a retrograde period is not a good time to sign any contracts or even to shake hands on any new agreements. Do not close on a house during this time nor sign a lease. Verbal agreements are considered the same as written ones. The environment will be quite fluid and changeable, no matter what you are told or what you think.

“It’s not that the people you are dealing with are necessarily duplicitous. It’s just that nobody can fully predict what conditions will be like later. If you start a new job, it won’t necessarily be the position you thought it was when you accepted it. If you are a manager, you will have difficulty choosing the right candidate for the job, so, if you can, hold off hiring anyone. If you buy a house, problems could crop up later that were completely unanticipated.”

I myself paid dearly for not following my advice earlier on.I have been trying to enroll in an online study program.

Nothing is working!!!

The school got the application wrong. The financial institution messed up. Eventually I was enrolled in the complete wrong course.

Rather go fishing

Till next time

New Services on The Sun

Here on the sun its getting quite hot again. Recently we launched a new service thus far with outstanding results.

It all came about some time ago. As per usual I had developed an issue with one of my websites.

I contacted my service provider only to be told it will cost X amount to update or rectify this or that.

It then dawned on me how much I  have been paying for these updates tweaks etc.

A quick calculation over the last few years indicated the price of a small horse.

I took time out to learn about WordPress.

Armed with a small arsenal of newly found knowledge I attempted the up till now impossible.

I built my own website.

One thing led to the next, and before I knew it I had completed a few.

These were in my eyes astronomical feats of note. I found one key aspect extremely relevant “If you mess up now” It catches up later. WordPress does not have an alarm bell that rings every time you make a mistake .Not even a gentle nudge in the right direction. It simply messes up the end result in a big way. Therefore you may have spent hours or days further on, and suddenly chaos sets in.

The only way to resolve this is by backtracking step by step undoing everything until you find the error.

Thus by spending hundreds of hours online building my own sites, and going through every single error possible I can finally say I am able to put a site such as this one together.

Or a more recent one

My offer to  my esteemed followers on the blog is the following:

Contact me on if you are looking at building a basic WordPress site, and either don’t have the time or patience to deal with it.

Let’s have a chat as I am sure for a fee far lower than any web developer or designer we can structure something. You only pay once you are 100% satisfied, and I maintain it for a small monthly admin fee.

If you are dealing in US$ even better for you as our currency i.e. South African Rand is very weak at present.

If I could be a child again for a day

The other day out of the blue the neigbours little son Tommy who is about five years old comes along.

He tugs me on my trousers and says “Uncle what is like to be old”?

I was speechless. Dumbstruck at first and then it dawned on me. I am in my late 40s and back when I was his age anyone older than let’s say 20 was ancient.

I couldn’t provide him an obvious answer on the spot so to speak .Later on I reflected what it might be like to be in the body of a 45 year old with the mind and spirit of a young child.

Imagine the carefree world. You could say exactly what was on your mind to just about anyone without too severe consequences. I could march right into the bosses’ office and tell him my exact thoughts straight from my heart instead of acting all false and pretentious so as to uphold company protocol and a sense of decency society expects from me.

I would confront The Mr. know it all down the passage .Just march into his office draw an imaginary line on the carpet and dare him to cross it, for the fear of pummeling him to the ground.

If I didn’t get my way in the boardroom meeting I would throw myself onto the carpet and have a tantrum of note until they see it my way after all.

On the other hand the amount of vigor and imagination that would come to the fore. This without fear of being thought of as stupid. I would not yet understand the term rejection so new brilliant ideas would flow like a river.

Once again having tremendous insight into complicated matters, and solving them with simplicity instead of getting bogged down in technical details.

Never worrying about finances again, and having to turn each buck over thrice. If I don’t have any money left it is not the end of the world. Just have a shoulder shrug and say so what?

If I didn’t like how someone conducted their business. I could just walk right in pack my stuff up like toys and say up yours I am out of here!!!

If I really fancied my female coworker. I could just walk up to her and plant a big kiss on her cheek without fear of being slapped or worse. She would just blush and giggle instead of calling the cops.

My productivity levels would increase 100%.I would have endless energy all day everyday. Lunchtime I could just take a short nap wherever. In the office even or on the carpet.

I wouldn’t have to spend thousands on designer suits and fancy haircuts. No accounts or slave labour for a pittance.

I could more easily fit into just about any role, as I would not yet have been molded by society to fit into a single frame. I could swop roles in the company at will, and be excellent at any of them due to my inborn innate intelligence, not yet robbed by society.

If only I was a child again for a day…………………………………
